A cold Manchester morning, December ’73
alight at Piccadilly, the matriarch and me
we make our way down Store street
across the wasted ground, to Chapeltown

And all the taxi's are there early
been working through the night
we open up the cafe 6 till 6, for times are tight
I lend a hand as much as any lazy kid would do
and earn a quid or two, to see the day through

A warm Manchester evening, May 2006
I stumble out of Sankeys inspired by the mix
I dodge the nutters on Great Ancoats
and I make my drunken way to Chapeltown

There’s no longer people waiting
no longer any soul
this solace of my childhood
now just bricks within a hole
I close my eyes for comfort
plucking memories from the air
I feel my father there
and drift away … from Chapeltown.
